The short answer
This cannot be answered in general. For a balcony added later, a building permit or another procedure may be required depending on the federal state, location and project. The relevant state building code is decisive; in Baden-Württemberg that is the Landesbauordnung Baden-Württemberg (LBO). Binding information comes from the responsible building authority and the professional planners supporting your project.
What influences the question
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Federal state and municipality | State building codes differ; municipalities can have additional bylaws |
| Type and size of the balcony | Construction type, dimensions and number of storeys change the requirements |
| Position on the plot | Distances to plot boundaries and neighbours may be relevant |
| Building and surroundings | Heritage protection or design requirements can trigger additional requirements |
| Ownership | Tenants need the owner’s consent, owners’ associations generally need a resolution |
How to proceed
- Describe the project: Set dimensions, storeys, construction type and location, for example in the 3D configurator.
- Ask the building authority: Ask the building supervision office of your municipality or district which procedure applies to your project.
- Compile the verifications: Drawings, plot and building data and structural verifications are typically needed. Which exactly is decided by the authority.
- Use optional support: NOVODACH offers structural design and support with the permit application as optional services. They are not automatically included in the balcony price; scope and price are agreed separately (Structural design and building permit).
What you should not assume
- That rules from another federal state or a forum post also apply to your plot.
- That a balcony is permitted without asking because it is small.
- That a neighbour’s consent replaces the authority’s review.
Next step
Define your desired configuration and then clarify the procedure with the building authority: Configure your balcony. For the process as a whole: Adding a balcony later.
General information, not legal advice and not structural design. The information from the responsible authority and project-specific professional planning are binding.
